You can travel from Cartagena to Barú by road or by sea. The right route depends on the exact destination, your luggage and the time available. Reaching one beach in Barú does not mean you have reached every property in the area. For a house accessed by water, a car journey covers only part of the trip.
Before booking transport, get the property’s name, check the final approach and plan the return. That matters particularly when connecting with a flight, travelling with children or bringing groceries for several days. A complete journey plan is more useful than a headline time for one boat ride.
The two routes to our house
Casa Gaviota is in Punta Piedra, Isla Barú. Around one to one and a half hours from Cartagena is a useful initial reference, with additional time allowed for boarding. We coordinate these two routes:
| Route | Approximate travelling time | What to coordinate |
|---|---|---|
| Direct boat from Cartagena | 45–60 minutes on the water | Departure point, boarding time, luggage and return |
| Road to Barú village, then boat | 60–75 minutes by road, then 10–15 minutes by boat | Pickup, connection between legs, boarding and return |
Individual leg times do not necessarily include collection, waiting, loading bags or reaching the boarding point. Traffic, your starting address in Cartagena and sea conditions can extend them. Avoid planning a tight connection by adding up navigation time alone.
The direct boat avoids a change between car and boat. The road combination leaves a shorter stretch on the water, worth discussing if someone is prone to seasickness. Neither removes the need to board a boat. Tell us who is travelling so we can discuss what suits the group, rather than treating the shortest journey on paper as the most comfortable for everyone.

Reaching Barú is not the same as reaching the house
The road route passes through Pasacaballos and continues towards Barú village. From there, you still need the boat connection. If you arrange your vehicle independently, confirm the agreed destination before leaving. Simply asking a driver to take you “to Barú” leaves an important part of the journey unresolved.
At our house, the final leg is always by boat, including for guests travelling mostly by road. We have a dock and coordinate arrival with you. You cannot drive to the front door. That distinction also matters when bringing a pushchair, a large suitcase or shopping for a self-catering stay.
Our location section and map link help you locate Punta Piedra. You then need the boarding instructions for your visit. Share them with everyone organising transport; a saved map link on one person’s phone is not a complete handover.
For sea travel, confirm that the boat you book actually comes to Casa Gaviota. Transport to another beach, a sightseeing stop and a direct property transfer are different services. Establish the destination before paying, together with where you would be collected for the return.
Pack for the boat on either route
Pack so that your luggage can move between vehicle, boarding point and house. Several manageable bags can be easier than one very heavy item. Mention bulky belongings beforehand: space for passengers and luggage needs to be considered together.
- Protect documents, phones and electronics from spray.
- Keep water for your journey, sun protection and children’s essentials within reach.
- Separate medication and necessary personal items from bags you can leave closed during the transfer.
- Count your bags when changing transport, particularly with several families travelling together.
- Discuss mobility needs before booking, including steps, boarding and movement over sand.
Do not judge accessibility from a dock photograph. Describe the assistance a person needs and ask how each leg would work. This gives us a chance to review the approach before you commit to arrangements that might be difficult.
For Basic Experience, buy groceries in Cartagena before travelling. The house has an equipped kitchen for self-catering. Include those purchases in the luggage plan: supplies for two people and supplies for ten take up different amounts of space. With Full, we discuss the meals and dietary requirements beforehand.

What transport is included?
Separate three items when reading a proposal: transport from Cartagena, the boat from Barú village and accommodation. The word “transport included” does not tell you where that service starts.
For overnight stays, the round-trip Barú village boat is included for two or more nights. One night in Basic adds COP 300,000 per group. In Full, that one-night transport cost is incorporated once in the package total, alongside meals. The Cartagena leg is quoted separately.
A private boat from Cartagena starts from COP 800,000 each way, depending on group size. This is a transport reference, not the cost of the stay or a universal fare for any number of passengers. Ask for the complete outward and return proposal.
For a day visit, check the inclusions through the beach-day request page. Do not use overnight meal rules to estimate a few hours at the house. Your date, group and route need to be clear in the day-trip proposal itself.
Before leaving Cartagena
Boats do not run after dark. Plan to arrive in daylight rather than booking a flight or leaving the city on the assumption that the final leg operates at any hour. If your flight lands late, discuss the connection with us before arranging a night in Barú.
Overnight check-in is at 11:00 and checkout at 08:00. Coordinate transport around those times; departure breakfast does not mean staying for the rest of the morning. Day visits have their own agreed timings.
The day before travel, confirm pickup or boarding point, contact, passenger and bag counts, route and return. Let us know about delays as soon as you can. Our private-transfer booking checklist helps you review a proposal without overlooking a connection.
