Two nights in Barú provide something very practical: a complete day between arrival and departure without boarding again halfway through the plan. Use it for swimming, reading, meals and conversation, or ask about a nearby outing. Enjoying the stay does not require filling every hour.
At Casa Gaviota, check-in is 11:00 and checkout 08:00. “Two slow days” therefore means an arrival afternoon, a full middle day and departure morning, rather than two complete days plus a long final morning. This guide suggests how to use that time and what to decide before travelling.
Arrival: settle in, then head for the water
First settle the route. Around one to one and a half hours is the general Cartagena journey reference. Arrange a direct boat or road to Barú village followed by its boat connection. The last leg is always by water, using the dock. Boats do not operate after dark: discuss your timings before committing to a connection.
Pack for the house and the boat
Keep swimwear accessible, with sun protection, repellent and clothes for after swimming. Protect documents and devices from spray. With children, group travel essentials together and mention bulky luggage or a pushchair beforehand.
For Basic, buy groceries in Cartagena before travelling. Use one list covering all meals and add shopping bags to the luggage plan. For Full, provide ages, allergies and preferences in advance so meals can be agreed. Making those decisions before arrival avoids spending the first afternoon reorganising the group.
The first afternoon
After check-in, settle into bedrooms and choose between swimming and shade. The house is in Punta Piedra, with approximately eighty metres of private beach without vendors. House and beach are exclusively for your party; there is no need to find another venue for gathering.
With Full, lunch and dinner are part of arrival-day service. Between them, spend time on the balcony, in a hammock or reading. An outing is not necessary to make the first day worthwhile: sharing a table and learning the house layout help everyone settle in.
There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms for up to ten overnight guests. One bedroom is upstairs with balcony access, and two are downstairs. Confirm beds and allocation before assigning rooms, particularly if someone needs to avoid stairs or sleep close to a child.
The middle day: no transfer in the middle
This is the day the second night provides. Have breakfast without packing bags at the same time, then choose swimming, paddling or reading. When interests differ, open spaces, terraces and hammocks let people separate for a while and meet again for meals.
Water, shade and time together
Kayaking is an option when conditions suit. Ask about equipment use and agree who will participate. With children, establish water supervision clearly rather than assuming another person in the party will take responsibility without a conversation.

Lunch can bring together people who spent the morning differently. Afterwards, return to the sea, balcony or conversation in the shade. Fish with coconut rice, patacones and salad is a menu example; dishes are agreed before arrival according to your food arrangements.
For another activity, the Aviario Nacional is approximately fifteen minutes away and the Islas del Rosario around twenty minutes by boat from the house. Ask about transport, timings and inclusions before adding an outing. You do not need both: the day can stay focused on house and beach.
Afternoon and evening
A Soundboks speaker is at the house. For a celebration, ask about a papayera band; a beach bonfire is possible for overnight guests. Establish coordination, availability and any extra cost before including them. An optional idea works better than a promise made to the group without checking.
Exclusive use does not guarantee silence from boats, neighbours or the setting. Within your own party, agree music and rest for people turning in earlier. Sharing space is easier when those preferences are stated.
Departure: breakfast and the agreed boat
Checkout is 08:00. Pack some belongings the night before so breakfast and gathering bags do not become a last-minute rush. Agree the return before travelling, particularly if you connect with a flight or another Cartagena commitment.
Full includes departure breakfast, but that does not mean remaining for the whole morning. Allow for the complete connection: boarding, boat, any change to a vehicle and onward travel. Our private-transport guide helps you review those legs.

Come prepared for the nights
Bedrooms have fans and mosquito nets renewed annually, without air conditioning. Showers use natural-temperature fresh water without a heater. Bring repellent. Land crabs may move outside at night; they are harmless.
Manuel looks after the property, lives fifty metres away and is there at night. Daily cleaning covers surfaces and common areas. Knowing these details beforehand helps you pack, organise the night and decide whether this type of house suits your group.
Choose Basic or Full, and connect when you want
Basic is accommodation with an equipped kitchen, excluding meals. Full adds a cook: arrival lunch and dinner; middle-day breakfast, lunch and dinner; departure breakfast. Food is charged for two nights, not three full days. Adults are COP 150,000 per night, children aged five to seventeen COP 100,000, and under-fives eat free.
For two nights, the Barú village round-trip boat is included in both packages. Cartagena transport is separately quoted. Check accommodation for your dates and the food guide to complete the budget.
Starlink with battery backup is available. Connect or put your phone aside as it suits you. The visit does not require a disconnection programme: your party chooses what to do with a full day when you do not have to change location.
